Living an epic retirement means continuing to do what you love, regardless of age.
Ryman Healthcare resident Brian embodies this philosophy every day.
After moving into Raelene Boyle Retirement Village with his wife Karlene in 2022, Brian quickly discovered where he would spend much of his spare time — the workshop.
Before retiring, Brian ran his own construction business, making the transition to the workshop a natural one.
These days, it provides him with both purpose and satisfaction.
Brian spends his time crafting various items and repairing things for the village and its residents.
“Right now, I’m making wooden bowling ball carriers for the bowling green,” he says.
“I’ve made Christmas trees, Easter eggs, bunny rabbits, chooks, and hearts for residents in aged care and dementia care to decorate. I also built fiddle boards and a hammer set — these are things they can interact with safely.”
Around the village, Brian is known as "Mr. Fix-It," always ready to lend a hand.
Although he helps independent residents and assisted-living residents, he finds creating personalised items for care residents the most rewarding.
“These aren’t things you can buy in a shop. They’re unique, and the residents can add their own touch by decorating them.”
Beyond the various things he has created, the workshop also became a new home for the many tools Brian owned through his construction business.
His downsizing journey was made even easier when he was able to donate them for other residents to use.
When Brian isn’t in the workshop, he’s volunteering with the Victoria State Emergency Service (SES), where he has served for 37 years.
For Brian, the key to living an epic retirement is staying active, whether it’s through volunteering or spending time in the village workshop.
“As long as I’m busy, I’m happy,” he says.
Brian's story is a testament to the power of purpose in retirement — proof that staying engaged with his community and giving back can make this life stage truly epic.
